5 Things to Do Before Selling Your iPad
Doing these steps before you ship ensures there are no delays, no payment holds, and no back-and-forth emails. Total time: 10–15 minutes.
1. Back Up Your Data
Once you factory reset, everything is gone. Back up first.
- iCloud: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Wait for it to complete. Takes 5–30 minutes depending on how much data you have.
- Mac/PC: Connect your iPad via USB. Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC) and select Back Up Now.
2. Remove Apple ID and Disable Find My iPad
This is the most important step. An iPad that arrives with Find My still enabled cannot be processed.
- Settings → [your name] → scroll down → Sign Out
- Enter your Apple ID password
- Toggle off any data you don't want to keep on iCloud
- Tap Sign Out and confirm
If you have any Apple Pencil or keyboard paired, unpair those in Settings → Bluetooth first.
3. Factory Reset
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Erase All Content and Settings. The iPad will restart and show the setup screen. That's exactly what we need.
4. Confirm Your iPad Model and Storage
Before factory reset, note your storage capacity (Settings → General → About → Capacity). This determines your buyback value. The storage on the About page is the full capacity (e.g., 256 GB) — use this when getting your quote, not the "Available" number.

5. Check for Damage and Be Accurate
Inspect your iPad under good light. Look for:
- Screen cracks or chips
- Dents or bends in the aluminum frame
- Scratches on the screen
- Any discoloration or dead pixels
