Locked vs Unlocked iPhone Value
A carrier-locked iPhone is typically worth 10-20% less than the same model unlocked. The gap is smaller on newer models (iPhone 14+) because carriers have made unlocking easier. On older models (iPhone 11, 12), the discount can be 15-25%.
Why the discount? A locked phone only works on one carrier network until unlocked, limiting the buyer pool. But the hardware is identical — same camera, same chip, same storage. How to Check if Your iPhone Is Locked
Go to Settings → General → About. Look for "Carrier Lock" or "Network Provider Lock." If it says "No SIM restrictions," your phone is unlocked. If it shows a carrier name, it's locked to that carrier.

If you can unlock it for free, do it — you'll get more money. Most carriers unlock phones after they're paid off. Call your carrier or use their website/app. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all have online unlock request tools. The process takes 1-3 business days.

Carrier-Locked vs iCloud-Locked
These are completely different. Carrier lock = works only on one network but is otherwise fully functional. iCloud lock (Activation Lock) = the phone is tied to someone's Apple ID and can't be set up without their password. iCloud-locked phones are worth dramatically less — often only parts value.
